atera - new york, ny
77 worth street
new york, ny 10013

about the restaurant:
 - situated in tribeca, atera is a 13(?) seat chef's counter experience helmed by chef matthew lightner, whose resume most notably includes time at noma and mugaritz
- two seatings per night (tues-sat)
- tasting menu only featuring roughly sixteen courses plus snacks
- dinner must be paid for in advance via cityeats
- two michelin stars, three from the new york times
overall thoughts:
this was the meal i was most looking forward to on our recent trip to new york, and i am happy to say that my huge expectations were met and even exceeded. after enjoying a pair of cocktails in the restaurant's subterranean lounge, we were sat on the right side of the chef's counter and almost immediately hit with a barrage of "snacks" to get our palates going. moving into proper courses, the meal progressed in a very logical fashion with vegetables and light seafood leading into bird and beef dishes followed by multiple desserts. i was planning on naming the standout dishes, but as i scroll through my pictures i am realizing that over half the menu would be listed. we opted for the wine pairings, and while i was very happy with everything that was poured (loved the inclusion of sake and beer), i ended up quite drunk by meals end, and am afraid i was struggling to keep a proper conversation with the staff. the pre-meal cocktail and long day of travel probably played into it as well. as far as service goes, atera was top notch, with the two captains handling the counter being friendly without becoming overbearing and humorous but never smug. chef lightner was not in the kitchen during our meal, and while it would have been cool to see him, i am certain that our meal did not suffer in his absence. overall, atera is easily the best meal i have had outside of a michelin three star, and i really feel that the restaurant has a shot at the aforementioned rating in the near future.
